Lesson Study or in japenesse called as Jugyo Sinkekyu is a multi-level approach to improving the quality of learning. Lesson Study that developed by Center of Research and International Collaboration and Education Development (CRICED) Tsukuba Jepang CRICED since 2004 at least has 2 (two) areas, that is Mathematics Education and Special Education. The basic element of Lesson Study is cooperation, such as the cooperation among the teachers, the cooperation among the teachers and lecturers and cooperation among instance such as schools, universities, MGMP or Education Office. Cooperation developed based on teacher self-disclosure to reflect and communicate the processes and the learning outcomes.
Lesson Study has various benefits such as: to improve the professionalism of teachers, to improve the quality learning, to develop the potential and serve the needs of the students, todevelop the visual aid equipments or the teaching-learning equipments, etc.
On the other hand we have a strong foundation to develop the educational
for children with special needs. There are various of abilities, potential and difficulties experienced by children with special needs, then it is logic that development of children with special needs learning requires more attention. Based on that, Lesson Study offers an intermediate-term and long-term solution of learning mathematics that suitable with characteristics of the children with special needs.
for children with special needs. There are various of abilities, potential and difficulties experienced by children with special needs, then it is logic that development of children with special needs learning requires more attention. Based on that, Lesson Study offers an intermediate-term and long-term solution of learning mathematics that suitable with characteristics of the children with special needs.
Ebutt and Straker (1995) defines school mathematics including school mathematics for children with special needs rather than as a science but rather as creativity and social activities that provide opportunities for children with disabilities specifically to look for patterns or relationships between one concept with another concept, conducting investigations in accordance with the abilities of each children, tries to solve mathematical problems, and communicate the results to another friends or teachers either orally or written. Some of the problems when children with special need studied mathematics also occur when studying other material. The problem happen on the utilization and processing mathematical information, using information related with mathematics, remembered some explanation or mathematical procedures, seeking relationship and using mathematics. Another problem related to physical constraints or others, may be because they can not read well, do not understand the meaning or intent emblems or symbols of mathematics, can not consentrate or focus and can not control theirself. For that Torey Hayden (2004) suggested that teachers need to focus on the important things, using simple and clear steps and strategies, always giving and planning assistance whether oral, written or visual, learning process based on the existing context and linking with the concrete objects, doing repetition, and serve the student needs immediately.
If we assume that the Lesson Study is an education research activities. Lesson Study as a research will provide an opportunity for teachers to discuss the learning process preparation, implementating and at the same time also reflecting. The result of Lesson Study can be useful for the improvement of the curriculum (KTSP) and the syllabus, textbooks, as well as the other sources of learning process.
Based on studies in some countries, such as Japan, Australia, and Thailand; there are some variation at Lesson Study implementation. If desired is the improvement learning and the preparation as well as understanding the curriculum, the Lesson Study can conducted by working with other teachers and invited a lecturer as a resource person. This Lesson Study called as School-Based Lesson Study. But if desired is to improving communications between teachers or between MGMP or other school and university, then it can be implemented Cross-School Lesson Study. Lesson Study in broader scope both the district, provincial or one country called the Cross-District Lesson Study. Today has developed cooperation internationally for the implementation of Lesson Study in several countries simultaneously.
