Calculator has important role in the process of learning mathematics in developed countries. This is indicated by the utilizing of calculators in most of educational level of mathematics learning. Importance meaning of calculator is as a bridge of arithmetic and algebra (Tenoch E. Cedillo;2002:1).
Types of calculators had great development. Looking from the utilization, calculator consists of two types. That is regular calculators and scientific calculators. Regular calculator is widely used in everyday life. According to this kind of calculator, which sign pressed first that done first. While the scientific calculator widely used by high school, scientific calculator has work by following mathematics rules.
Learning is a complex process that occurs to everyone as long as his life. One sign that someone has learned if there is behavior change, this may caused by changes in the level of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. (Azhar Arsyad; 2000:1). Thus teachers duty to encourage, guide and facilitate learning for students to achieve their goal. (Slameto; 1995: 97)
Calculator seen as one of learning tool. Hambre and Desert on his research entitled Effect Of Held-Held Calculators In Precollege Mathematics Education (1986) concluded that: a) calculator should be used at every mathematics learning process, b) the computer very helpful to improving problem-solving skills, especially for students with low and high ability.
Stages of calculators utilization as a mathematics learning tool at SMK Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta are: The first stage is the stage of understanding of the significance calculator graph. The essence of the understanding process is basic and detail explanationabout the graphics calculator. The second stage is understanding the calculators theory and utilizing in equations and inequalities to solve problems. The third stage, namely stage of entering the problem data to the calculator graph. The process of entering data into the calculator about the process is the process of moving the languageinto mathematics language in terms of graphics calculators. The fourth stage is interpretation of the graphics calculator screen and make some conclusions.
From the research, there are some aspects of graphics calculator utilizing in learning mathematics as follows: Graphics calculator is useful to determine and match graphic images; Graphics calculator is useful to determine and match the solution set; Graphics calculator giving real experience of graphic images; Settlement about equations and inequalities can use the command, symbolic manipulation and graphics; Graphics calculator is useful to provide answers that previously calculated without a calculator and accelerate the completion mathematics matter; The difficulties of the students when using graphics calculator are when paraphrase sentences into the mathematics languages calculator and disclose any appearance of the calculator screen to mathematical sentences; Using graphics calculator in the mathematical learning process, mathematics lessons become more interesting and solving math problems easier; If the utilizing of graphics calculators with no offset capabilities for understand the operating procedures and mathematical thinking, it causing a high level of dependence, loss confidence, and lazy to thinking.
